Following an expected calm at 11 pm, Forestry officials were hoping to make some progress against the fire during the night. But the wind returned shortly after midnight and ran the fire further east and into the area of North Myrtle Beach.

Around 4 am the fire jumped Hwy. 22 and started spreading into the populated areas. More than 40 homes have been burned so far. Update: A later report is saying that more than 70 homes have been destroyed so far.

At 5:30 this morning SC Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins said they believe the fire spans 7,000 to 8,000 acres, and despite some media reports the fire is not under control at all. Forecasts call for weather conditions to start worsening around noon today.
WMBF-TV is running continual updates with several video reports on the fire HERE.
