Minneola Still Unsettled

HOLDING THEIR FIRST MEETING SINCE THE INFAMOUS Fire Department Shut-down, the Minneola, Florida, City Council got itself embroiled in verbal attacks and accusations in response to the city manager’s decision to close the entire fire department for 48 hours last week.  (See Firegeezer report HERE.)

Despite the city manager’s claim that he had the full backing of the city council when he did that, it turns out that the mayor is the only member who did support the bizarre move.  Some city council members went so far as to say that they were never even advised that it was being considered in the first place.

The mayor, obviously on the defensive, kept trying to move the meeting on to other agenda items, but the council kept hammering on the topic for a full hour.  During the session they asked the city manager several questions, but he just wrote them down and said that he’d answer them later.  Referring to the mayor’s statement last week that “the fire department is dysfunctional,” the vice-mayor who has been the mayor’s main protagonist throughout this said, “For him to get on camera and say the things he said about our fire department and our fire department personnel you know it’s a good thing that they are the professionals they are and they’re still going to respond to your address when your address comes up because by God I don’t think I would. I think I would let you sit and die.”

Finally they voted to do what political bodies always do, they decided to have an investigation into what happened.

TV Channel 13 has a video report from the meeting HERE.
