Burns had been placed on administrative leave on February 20 and has been away from the department since then. Last week he sent an email to the FD staff that he had resigned effective March 31.
The Everett Herald is reporting:
Bothell city spokeswoman Joyce Goedeke said she could not provide details about why Burns was placed on leave, saying it was a personnel matter, and private.
Burns is a well-known Snohomish County fire official who served the city of Everett for nearly 25 years before taking the Bothell job in September 2006.
His departure was preceded by a city investigation, Bothell Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Allen said.
When he was selected for the post, he was the top candidate from 42 applicants. The city is now opening a search for a replacement and Deputy Fire Chief Rudy Alvarado has been appointed the acting chief .
