Quincy Landlords In Legal Trouble Following Fatal Fire

Comments Off

A THREE-STORY HOUSE CONVERTED TO APARTMENTS in Quincy, Massachusetts, was the scene of a tragic fire early Wednesday morning.

The building had been converted to apartments and was legally permitted to have four family units in it.  Earlier this month a health inspector found an illegal apartment in the attic and suspected another impermissable apartment was in the basement.  The building inspector then planned to carry out a surprise inspection on the property on Friday, tomorrow.  But they were too late.

A fire started in a couch in the basement apartment during the night and killed a man and his two young sons.  The wife was courageously rescued by the ladder company, but she is suffering from burns and smoke inhalation and remains in critical condition.  WFXT-TV Boston has this video report:

Post-fire inspection revealed that there were no working smoke detectors in any of the apartments and a hardwire detector system in the stairwell and hallways had been deliberately turned off.  The two men who own the building have not yet been located for questioning.

The Quincy Patriot Ledger has more of the STORY including the report on the ladder company being part of a service rotation scheme.
