Roof Safety Follow-Up

OUR TRAINING TIP FROM LAST WEEK covering the use of halligans/axes as footholds for roof ventilations (see Firegeezer HERE) brought lots of comments and opinions as to whether it was being done properly.

That led to GeezerReader Matt K. sending this pic along with a challenge for you to see if you can spot the safety hazard in this man’s use of the axe:

Hint:  There might be more than one safety violation.

I agree with Happy Medic, but what he also failed to mention is, the gentleman’s coat is unzipped also!!

Loose clothing always poses a hazard.

and if he is trying to do an electric disconnect through the smoke he really should consider using the blade side of the axe…………

Those pants look a little polyesterish to me, which no longer complies with NFPA’s station wear standards.

He obviously misunderstood when the Chief said he wanted to see an “Aggressive attack on the fire”

the fact that the roof seems to be caving in with the fire below him probably might be a potential problem?…

Good footing and stance but he needs more of a horzontal swing with the axe… Where is the color matching bandana for airway protection?

Hand placement leaves a bit to be desired. Should have them further apart and slide the top towards the bottom as he reaches the end of the stroke for more force.

Looks like his mustache might not allow for a good seal on his SCBA facepiece, so why bother wearing one?

I bet his socks don’t match. Where’s the cigarette? Not to mention those nasty splinters that axe handles can give you without gloves…..

He is clearly not wearing a belt…his pants are about to fall down.

There’s no place for plumber’s (no offense to any brothers who may also be plumbers) crack at a fire scene.
