It's truly remarkable to look at some of the old hiring practices, and see people who would routinely quit after a few weeks on the job, then be hired a couple weeks later by another shop in the same plant. Or leave to another company and come back -- during economic booms American industrial corporations suffered greatly under the market forces that allowed disgruntled employees to leave easily. So one of the union "selling" points was they'd help resolve differences short of employees quitting.
