17 Cats, 6 Dogs, 4 Homes

Comments Off

FIREFIGHTERS IN RED LION, PENNSYLVANIA, (near York) had their hands full Friday morning when a fire started in a home around 8:30 am.  The house was one of four attached dwellings with a common attic that were built in 1905.

Investigators believe that the fire started in a space between the basement ceiling and the first floor near a furnace.  The fire raced up the hidden space into the attic and quickly spread to the other three homes.  The call for mutual aid brought a dozen fire departments to the township where they were able to contain the fire in the below-freezing temperature, but the four houses involved were all destroyed.

Complicating the operations was an unusual situation in one of the homes that was owned by a lady who works for a stray-animal shelter organization.  Their shelter had recently closed down and she had brought the remaining animals home with her while placement efforts were continuing.  A total of 17 cats and six dogs were scattered around the house, and since there was no human life hazard in the ongoing fire, the FF’s were able to get in and located all of the dogs and some of the cats.  All the others had scattered.

The York Dispatch posted this VIDEO about the animal rescues.

The fire was brought under control in two hours and damage loss is estimated to be $500,000.

The York Daily Record carried the STORY.

Morning Lineup – January 18

During the past week there were four deaths of notable public people that caught my attention.  They seem to come in batches, don’t they?  I’ll just point them out and if you want to find out more about their careers you can easily enter their names into your favorite search engine.

Tuesday we learned that Ricardo Montalban passed away at age 88.  He became a famous movie star in the 1940′s and 50′s playing opposite some of the hottest female leads of the time.  When his movie roles dried up because of his advancing age, he turned to television.  One of his most memorable roles was the host of “Fantasy Island.”  He was also remembered for his Chrysler commercials where he plugged the seat coverings made of “silky-smooth Corinthian leather,” of which there was no such thing.

Also on Tuesday another well-known actor died.  Patrick McGoohan, 80, is probably best-known in the U. S. for two of his TV series’, Secret Agent (with that catchy theme song performed by Johnny Rivers) and The Prisoner.  McGoohan was raised in Britain which gave him his recognizable accent, but he was actually born in Queens, NYC.

John Mortimer, a man whose name is largely unknown in the U. S., died on Friday at age 85.  He was a practicing barrister – what we would call a defense attorney – who was also a very prolific writer of fiction.  He wrote at least 30 plays that were successfully produced on the London stage, and literally scores of television scripts along with dozens of novels.  He came to the attention of many Americans as the man who penned the Rumpole of the Bailey semi-comedy series that featured a dumpy lawyer who always was defending some petty thief.  Rumpole often referred to his wife as “She who must be obeyed.”

And lastly, also on Friday, Andrew Wyeth passed away at his family home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, at age 91.  Wyeth was one of the premier American artists of the 20th century.  The Wyeths are a true artistic dynasty.  Andrew’s father N. C. Wyeth was a world-renowned painter and was known to every boy as the illustrator of action books like Treasure Island and Kidnapped.

Andrew achieved prominence in his own right and is probably most recognized by his “Christina’s World.”  His son Jamie is carrying on the family tradition by achieving his own artistic notoriety.

Updated:  More video added.

THE COLUMBUS, OHIO, FIRE DEPARTMENT is picking up from a 2 4-alarm fire earlier today that took out as many as 17 businesses.

The fire was in a block-long 2-story commercial building housing retail shops.  The fire was reported at 10:30 am when customers and employees in several of the stores smelled the smoke and shortly after saw the fire overhead.

The building apparently has a common attic (and unsprinklered).  The fire was contained at 1:30 pm and brought over 100 firefighters to the scene.

A Different Kind Of Arson Dog

WHEN YOU HERE THE TERM “ARSON DOG” you usually think of those sleek Laborador retrievers who sniff around the fire scene trying to detect an accelerant or other suspicious chemical.  But the Alabama Forestry Commission is training a bloodhound who will be sniffing out the arsonist himself.

bloodhound-blaze-tuscanews-lopez

Hello, Blaze
(Tuscaloosa News / Lopez photo)

Blaze is a 6-month-old puppy who just started training in December and has another eight months to go before he begins assisting investigators in tracking down fire-setters.  Over the past three years approx. 42% of all Alabama wildfires have been arsons, and they are hoping that not only will Blaze help in making more arrests, but that he will also act as a deterrent if the bad guys know that they can be tracked.

Brett Bralley writing for the Tuscaloosa News reports:

Once investigators determine the point of origin of a fire, they will bring Blaze to the site. Blaze will pick up a scent from a piece of physical evidence, such as a footprint, a tire track, clothing or a piece of trash.

The scent might be days old and covered over with several other scents, but Blaze should be able to track the scent for a few miles. Already, he can already track scents for about 500 yards while still in training.

Lamkin said even if an arsonist is driving on a highway, as long as a window is open or his scent is released through a vent in the car, Blaze should be able to pick up the scent.

“What he can trail off of is dead skin cells,” Lamkin said.

The funding for the purchase of the bloodhound and its training, food and care came from donations made by several volunteer fire organizations, a peace officers association and a Creek Indian tribe.

AS MUCH FLYING AS FOSSILMEDIC DOES, he’ll be glad to learn about this nifty gadget.  It’s the iFlyz, “the in-flight personal media solution.”

With more and more people downloading movies to watch later on their iPhones and Zunes, this handy device is hitting the market at just the right time.  It’s a flexible-arm media player holder that clamps onto the fold-down tray in your airplane seat.

iflyz-a

Before this came along, you would have to try and hold your player steadily for an hour or so (not possible) or prop it against the styrofoam drink cup (doesn’t work so well).  The iFlyz attaches to your device with a Garmin-type suction cup and allows you to bend the arm to just the right angle so you can sit back and enjoy your flick.

This neat little invention is new to the market and will be available in February.  But you can pre-order one now only $30 in the U. S., $35 in Canada and $38 everywhere else in the world.  The price includes the shipping costs.

You can read more about it and even order one at their website:

AS MORE VIDEOS COME AVAILABLE, WE ARE OFFERING SOME THAT ARE ENLIGHTENING.

This first video shows a surveillance camera-view of the plane as it hits the water and some views of the passengers waiting on the wings for the first ferry boat to arrive and pick them up:

This next video carries a U. S. Coast Guard surveillance camera view of the plane touching down along with some remarkable footage of the passengers evacuating the plane (calm and orderly !):

This AP News wrap-up has some views that haven’t been shown very often so far:

Update:
The NTSB announced today that they have discovered that one of the engines is still attached to the plane. The right-hand engine was not previously noticed because of the extremely murky water. Only one engine remains to be found somewhere in the deep silt of the river bottom.

HERE’S SOME GOOD NEWS FOR COFFEE DRINKERS.  According to a study released on Thursday, middle-aged people who drink from 3 to 5 cups of coffee daily have a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in their later years.

bunnomatic

A team of Swedish and Finnish researchers began the project twenty years ago when they began closely following 1,400 people in Finland.  In 1998 their memory functions were tested when all the subjects were 65 to 79 years old.  The test group was examined again last year and it was found that the coffee drinkers lowered their risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s by 60 to 65 per cent.

The lead researcher on the project, Miia Kivipelto said it remained unclear exactly how moderate coffee drinking helped delay or avoid the onset of dementia, but pointed out that coffee contains strong antioxidants, which are known to counter Alzheimer’s.

Some studies have also shown that coffee helps protects the nerve system, which can also protect against dementia, she said, pointing out that yet other studies show that coffee protects against diabetes, which in turn is known to be linked to Alzheimer’s.

“Going forward, researchers should try to nail down exactly what the protective elements in coffee consist in,” Kivipelto said.

It was also emphasized that moderate coffee use is key because it has been shown that heavy coffee consumption can lead to hallucinations.

AN OREM, UTAH, AMBULANCE WAS CALLED FOR AN “INTOXICATED” man laying on the sidewalk in freezing weather Thursday morning.  When the medics and the police converged on the scene, the officers noted that he was wearing clothing that matched that of a burglar recorded on a surveillance video just hours earlier.

The anxious burglar had broken into a neighborhood pharmacy, snatched some bottles of narcotics and dashed out while the alarm was sounding.  When police searched Travis Bennett’s pockets, they found three bottles containing 900 OxyContin tablets.

Victim Of Slow Response Wakes Up From 2-Year Coma

A MAN IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, WHO ALLEGEDLY was left laying unconscious for 13 hours awaiting an ambulance, woke up recently and started speaking.

On October 26, 2006, Ilija Marinovic, now age 57, fell and hit his head.  When the ambulance arrived 13 hours later they transported him to the hospital where part of his skull was removed to relieve the pressure.

The Herald Sun picks up the STORY :

Doctors told the Preston family that when he was taken off life support in November 2006, he would die.

He didn’t. The family was then told Mr Marinovic was in a vegetative state and would never recover.

“Every day for almost three years I have come to visit him at the Amity nursing home in South Morang and he has just laid there,” Mrs Marinovic said.

“A few weeks ago I was washing his face and, as I always do, I asked him how he was and he said, ‘I’m better’.

“I couldn’t believe it.”

Mr Marinovic was assessed by a specialist on Friday. Rehabilitation will be arranged.

Needless to say, the family is looking at legal options attacking the dispatching and response foul-up that led to this situation.

Drug Bag Stolen From UK Ambulance

Comments Off

SOMETIME DURING THE NIGHT SHIFT a drug bag was stolen from the back of a West Midlands Ambulance in Telford, England.

The drugs were discovered to be missing at 7 am this morning after the ambulance had completed several runs during the night.  The crew is unable to pinpoint where they were at the time of the theft.

The Shropshire Star REPORTS:

Suzie Fothergill, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “It is extremely disappointing anyone would consider taking anything off the back of an ambulance.

“However, our concern is the damage these drugs could do to someone who does not know what they are. Some of these drugs are cardio-active and therefore could cause heart failure if used incorrectly.

“It is important people understand all of the drugs taken have the potential to cause irreversible damage or even death unless taken appropriately.

“I am concerned they might be discarded and found by someone who may be tempted to use them and cause themselves or others serious harm.

Frozen Firefighters In Louisville

FRIDAY MORNING WAS THE FIRST TIME in 13 years that the temperature went below zero degrees in Louisville, Kentucky.  And it was during that memorable morning that the Louisville Fire Department had two simultaneous commercial fires.

Courier-Jounal / Huber photo

Just after 3 am a fire was reported in a large church and brought 15 units and 75 firefighters to the scene.  One hour later another alarm came in, this time for a restaurant.  This fire required another 8 companies and 45 firefighters.  With the on-duty force suddenly depleted and the situation complicated by the sub-zero temperatures, the FD initiated an immediate call-back of both off-duty shifts to cover the stations and man the reserve apparatus.

and re-hab service.  (Courier-Journal / Hall)

The fire in the Portland Avenue Presbyterian Church gutted the building which was built in the 1920′s.  Despite at least two hydrants freezing up, the FF’s were able to maintain a fire flow.  An initial investigation shows that the fire started in the church’s basement.  The cause is still undetermined.

The Mimosa Cafe and Egg Roll Machine, which has been in business for 12 years, was also completely destroyed by the fire which started in a trash bin outside the rear of the building.  The FD made a determined effort to contain the fire and not let it extend to a veterinary clinic next door where several animals were boarded.

Wow, the Kee-Kee birds are definitely out there this morning.  Looking at a temperature map I see many areas along the U. S. / Canada border that are in the minus-20′s and minus 30′s.  That’s almost incomprehensible to us folks down in Dixie.  When it’s that cold, water can freeze the moment it hits the air and I wonder how the firefighters manage when they are using outside streams.  Just keep plugging, I guess.

In Montreal they are experiencing water main breaks at the rate of 12 per week, thanks to the combination of the extreme cold and a water system that is still using pipes that are 120+ years old.  This photo was taken yesterday when a main burst and sent thousands of gallons (liters?) into a city street.  Those cars are not driving through the water – they are frozen in place in the water.

montreal-watermain-a-cbc

Needless to say, my own experience with working a fire during Oº F. temps is limited.  But I can never forget the novelty of coming out of the fire building and my protective clothing instantly freezing, turning me into a statue.  That’s weird.

Picking up was a challenge too.  We dragged the hose lines over to a pumper’s exhaust pipe where the couplings could be thawed quickly in order to be unscrewed.  Then we would bend the hose sections in the middle and load them onto the aerial ladder bed to be carried back to the station where they could thaw out.  Not fun.

I admire you guys who are out there this weekend doing your best.  Now let’s get ready for it and get this equipment checked out.  I’ll make sure there’s plenty of coffee.

County Seizes VFD

Comments Off

EARLIER TODAY THE PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY (Virginia) Board of Supervisors  dissolved one of the independent volunteer fire companies and took over their assets.  The County Fire and Rescue Dept. immediately took responsibility for running all calls in the district.

DAVE STATTER of WUSA-TV, Ch. 9 and blogger STATter911 has the exclusive story of this most unusual event.

The seizure took place following a 4-month auditing of the VFD where the company directors and officers failed to cooperate, in some cases impeding, with the official function.

Along with the usual financial hanky-panky, the audit exposed some very interesting  practices, including the fact that the fire chief and his entire family were living in one of the two firehouses.

STATter911 has the story, including the entire audit report, HERE.  If you have 20 minutes or so, be sure to read the audit report.  It’s a head-shaker.  Firegeezer wonders why this was allowed to go on for so long.   Most of this stuff wasn’t any secret.

Dramatic Rescue In Denver

DENVER, COLORADO, FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE to make a timely rescue early Friday morning, thanks to a savvy neighbor.

When the FD arrived at the fire around 1:30 am, they found the house fully involved.  But a next-door resident told them that they would find a man on the first floor near the rear of the house.  The FF’s got in and pulled the man out literally moments before the roof and second floor collapsed onto the first floor level where they were.

The Rocky Mountain News REPORTS:

“The neighbors looked out their windows, saw the fire and called it in,” Denver fire spokesman Joe Hart said of the blaze that was spotted about 1:35 this morning at 864 S. Pennsylvania St.

“The neighbors tried to make a rescue, but the front of the house was totally engulfed, and they couldn’t get in the back door,” Hart said.

Firefighters from Truck 16 made their way through the back door and found the victim lying on the floor inside the back door, Hart said.

“They pulled him out and started CPR,” Hart said. “When Denver Health and Hospitals paramedics arrived they took over the resuscitation and took the man to Denver Health Medical Center.”

A FEW OFF-TOPIC HEADLINES HAVE CAUGHT OUR EYE TODAY

*  Circuit City announced today that they will begin liquidating their assets after they failed to turn their business around after filing for bankruptcy protection this past November.  As recently as last week they were hoping that one of two potential buyers would close a deal to purchase the troubled chain, but nothing came of it.  Early last year they were actively courted by Blockbuster, but that deal fell apart after a fatal sales report came out after the 1st quarter.

They will be closing their remaining 537 stores in the U. S. and releasing 34,000 employees.  Circuit City also operates about 765 retail stores and dealer outlets in Canada. The company said its Canadian operations, which employ 3,000 workers, will continue to operate.

In terms of sales, Circuit City was #2 after Best Buy stores, but many agree that they have made several disastrous business decisions in the past few years that made them unprofitable.  CompUSA and Tweeter electronics retailers both went out of business in the past year also.  Half of all electronics sales are now conducted online.

They have reached an agreement with four liquidators and the close-out sale will begin tomorrow, Saturday January 17.

*  *  *  *  *

*  Last Friday the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper announced that they will shut down in 60 days unless they can find a buyer.  That hope does not have any promise however, as newspapers are shrinking and failing everywhere.

Last night (Thursday) the Minneapolis Star-Tribune filed for Chap. 11 Bankruptcy protection.  It follows several missed payments to the paper’s lenders, and it comes less than two years after a private equity group, New York-based Avista Capital Partners, bought the paper for $530 million.  Announcement HERE.

BOSTON MAYOR THOMAS MENINO HAS ORDERED Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser to immediately hire four licensed mechanics to work in the FD repair shop.

The firetruck maintenance division is currently staffed with 13 uniformed firefighters, none of whom are licensed mechanics.  According to the Boston Globe, Fraser said he was unaware of the gaps in truck maintenance until he was asked about it by the Globe this week. He said he had assumed his maintenance supervisors were making sure the service got done.  “No one brought to my attention that we were not doing routine maintenance,” Fraser said. “I have no experience in truck maintenance.”

Fraser says that the four new-hires will be to fill existing vacancies and none of the unqualified uniformed mechanics will be replaced.  The FF union Local has fought for years to maintain the status-quo in the shop despite the maintenance woes that have plagued the department for years.  Displaying an unerring ability to continually shoot himself in the foot, Local president Edward Kelly said that  that he wouldn’t oppose the hiring of licensed mechanics if it were negotiated as part of contract talks.

“Safety is of utmost importance,” Fire Commissioner Fraser said. “And right now, we don’t have within the maintenance division the knowledge, skills, and ability to run a routine preventive maintenance program.”

The Globe story by Donovan Slack chronicles the long-standing neglect of truck maintenance in the department HERE.

Arrests In Texas High School Arson

Comments Off

TWO GIRLS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED in connection with the fire that completely burned down the Lockney High School in Floyd County, Texas, Monday morning.  (See Firegeezer report HERE.)

Investigation quickly showed that the fire had two points of origin which tipped off the investigators that they were looking at an arson.  Tips from the community led deputies to the two 15-yr.-old girls and they were taken into custody late Monday night.  They are still being held in a youth detention center and are charged with felony arson.

The Plainview Daily Herald reports:

One teen reportedly was responsible only for a trash fire set outside the 80-year-old school on Saturday night. That fire was not reported to city officials, only to the high school principal, Floyd County Sheriff Paul Raissez said. The other teen confessed to being responsible for the fire set at the high school Sunday evening, he added.

The fire was started on the second floor with a lighter and paper. The girls attempted to start the fire first on the ground floor, but were unsuccessful and moved upstairs.

They claim that their motive was a desire for new textbooks and “more government funding” for their school which no longer exists, thanks to them.  If convicted, they face imprisonment for 2 to 20 years.

The fire, which may have burned for as much as four hours before it was discovered, is described by Lockney FD Fire Chief Joe Marks for the Plainview Daily Herald HERE.

There has been an update to the bizarre situation the other night in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, where 20 firefighters were taken to the hospital to be checked for HCN poisoning.  A few mistakes were made, but a combination of other factors compounded them into the circus that brought 40 ambulances to the scene.  Chief Billy Goldfeder of Firefighter Close Calls was able to track down the local fire chief and get the complete story.  He’s laid it out sequentially in the FCC website HERE.  Take a few minutes and check it out.  And learn from other’s experiences.

Yesterday’s plane crash in the Hudson River brought still another exhibit on how the internet (and the “citizen journalist”) are changing the dynamics of information dissemination in an overwhelming way.  Do you remember this photo (that I’ve cropped) of the people standing on the wing awaiting rescue?

hudson-d-janis-krums

You probably noticed that there are no rescue boats there yet.  Do you wonder where this picture came from?  And how it suddenly was showing up on websites all over the world within minutes?  This photo was posted on Twitter just moments after it was taken.

The shot was captured by a man named Janis Krums who was onboard one of the Hudson ferries that was nearby when the plane went down.  He took the picture and uploaded it directly to Twitter’s TwitPic pages with the one-line caption:  There’s a plane in the Hudson. I’m on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy.  And that’s it.  This man who was just minding his business was suddenly propelled into world-wide notoriety with an excellent photograph that was reproduced on websites and television stations literally everywhere.  And I can’t overemphasize the dramatic impact of the photo itself.  Just a marvelous shot.

If somebody had been carrying a pocket video camera, we might have been treated to some live-streaming of the whole shebang right from the start when the plane was observed cruising just a few feet above the water.  What’s next?  Will we be watching some psychic’s webpage to learn where the next incident is going to take place so that we can all rush out there to watch it happen?

You can join the other 124,000+ people who have viewed Janis’ TwitPic page by clicking HERE.

And then you can get this equipment checked out.  We haven’t yet installed the program that does it via computer.  And I’ll go start the (manual) coffee machine.

Update, 4:30:
Port Authority is reporting that everybody has been taken off the plane and there are NO major injuries.  (this is only a rough report)

The plane appears to be slowly sinking into the river, right wing down and left wing elevating out of the water.

Update, 4:40:
Hudson River may be as much as 50 ft. deep there.  Immediately after the plane went down, two tugboats arrived and positioned on each side of the fuselage, then broke out windows and ran cables through the plane and anchored them on the boats.  The tugboats have been keeping the plane afloat during the rescue operation.

Later report:  Plane was enroute to Charlotte, North Carolina, with 146 passengers and 5 crew members.

Update, 5:05:
Plane was airborne for 6 minutes and had reached 3,000-ft. altitude.  When engines both blew from impact, the pilot directed the plane over the Hudson River and brought it down in a controlled descent, avoiding a catastrophic crash in the city streets.

THE WEST METRO FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT provides fire and ambulance service for a large suburban area west of Denver, Colorado.  They have just put in service and new response information technology that is sold by Motion Technology.

This dispatch and response function puts an image on the vehicle’s computer screen that shows things like fire hydrant locations, up-to-the-minute populations of all hospitals, traffic obstructions, and aerial photographs of incident scenes.  An active map shows the locations and movements of all other emergency units in the area.  It can also be used to plot the shortest or quickest route to a destination.

The onBoard Mobile Gateway program has been deployed in Metro West’s 10 ambulances, 56 fire apparatus, and 7 command vehicles.  KMGH-TV has this video report showing the system in use (it follows the bus crash report that is used to blend into the dispatch story):

Goat Starts Fire That Destroys House

THREE ANIMAL-LOVING PEOPLE WERE ASLEEP insided their modest home Tuesday morning in Warren County, Iowa, when a desparate cat wakened one of them.

The aroused resident got his parents awake and out of the house and then he rounded up some other pets while they were waiting for the FD to arrive.   By the time the firefighters arrived the house was fully involved.  The temperature outside was below freezing and there was no water supply in the neighborhood, requiring a tanker shuttle.

The cause of the fire was determined to be from a goat kicking over a space heater.  There were two goats in a shed attached to the house and the residents had put a space heater in their to keep them warm.
