Foot-Thieving Former Firefighter Arrested

THE ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA, FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC who brought international attention and embarassment to her department by taking the severed foot of an accident victim home with her was arrested this morning and charged with theft.

The incident took place last September 19 when a man wrapped his car around a tree and caused a lengthy extrication.  A portion of his lower leg was severed in the wreck and it wasn’t recovered until after the ambulance had taken the victim to the hospital.  When the foot was freed, FF/Paramedic Cynthia Economou took possession of it and carried it back to the firehouse where she had a family member come by and take it home.  She said at the time that she was a “cadaver dog trainer” and wanted the foot for training.

See the earlier Firegeezer reports HERE, HERE and HERE for the stories on this bizarre event.

This afternoon (Monday) Florida Highway Patrol officers arrested her and charged her with 2nd-degree petit theft, defined as theft of property worth at least $100 but not more than $300.

Economou resigned from the department one week after the incident.
WPBF-TV has today’s report HERE.

LISTEN TO AN INTERVIEW with Cindy Economou, the FF/paramedic who took the foot back to the station.  She recounts the entire incident on this recorded interview HERE.

Can we get an interview with the person who decided that a foot was worth somewhere between $100-300? I would love to knw how these things are decided.

This belongs on “News Of The Weird”. I an sure if she had asked nicely and correctly at the County Medical Examiners Office for a body part for official cadaver dog training they might have helped her out.

In the end real life is often stranger then fiction.

Now to go watch Invasion of the Body Snachers…

It’s a shame, because Cindy is a really good person. She has spent her life and career helping people and animals. I hate to see that this happened to her.
She is such a caring person.

I’m going to go out on a limb and…..

Hey! Where did the limb go?

….suggest that the price of such an object is priced linearly, by the foot.

She may be a “really good person”, but people make poor decisions everyday. Just like I tell my daughter’s boyfriend….”Think about what you are doing, before you do it. If it seems the least bit inappropriate, it probably is.”

Gotta agree with this one. There is no reason to be sneaky. With so many cadaver dog handlers around the country, one would think that there is a procedure for obtaining body parts for “training aids.” Absconding with a body part from an emergency scene can’t be one of the procedures.
