FOR THE SECOND TIME IN JUST OVER A YEAR, a heavy fire has hit the Grand Parade in the resort town of Skegness in Lincolnshire, England.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 pm Monday evening from the Square Peg pub, a lovely Victorian building in the heart of the tourist district.  Fire officials are saying initially that they believe it started in the basement of the building and shot up inside the walls, quickly involving the entire building.

Firefighters were withdrawn  early in the operation and worked to keep the fire from spreading to the neighboring building.  Nearly 60 firefighters and 11 engines were used in the operation which included drafting water from a nearby pond to supplement the public water supply.

The building is left a shell this morning, but the town’s mayor hopes that the structure can be saved and rebuilt.  The Square Peg is just a few feet away from the site of a devastating fire that consumed an entire block of night spots in August of 2007 (see Firegeezer report HERE).  Coincidentally, work had just begun on the rebuilding of that block yesterday.
