The alarm came in around 1:30 am for the fire at Sister Sara’s bar, a popular night spot in the city center. While the bar was unoccupied at the time, the building is connected to a 20-unit apartment building. Fire Station Commander Kevin Lynch told the BBC News:
“When the fire did go out though the roof, there were three windows on the gable end of the block of flats, and it took a lot of effort to make sure the fire didn’t get through to the flats.”
“It was quite a serious incident and we had a lot of concerns early on, primarily with the threat to life in the flats,” he said.
The fire brigade had 50 FF’s on the scene and even though the bar was gutted, they managed to contain the fire to the fire building. The police are initially listing the fire as “suspicious.”
The Londonderry Sentinal has an early REPORT.
