According to a police spokeswoman, witnesses said a small, white car cut in front of a moving van traveling north on I-35 about 10:30 a.m. The truck swerved to avoid the car and hit a trailer attached to a one-ton truck parked on the shoulder of the highway, where two men were trying to fix it.  The collision ruptured the fuel tanks of the first truck and started the fire.

The two men working on the broken-down trailer were caught in the fire with one of them burning to death on the scene.  The other was airlifted to a burn center with a very poor prognosis.  The two men in the moving van, a box truck, suffered minor injuries.  The car that triggered the chain of events continued on without stopping and police are looking for it.
