When they arrived at the location shortly after 10 pm, the FD found a fire in progress and a little 2-yr.-old girl wandering around the front door of the house. As they were picking her up to carry her away, several shots rang out with some of them obviously targeting the fire apparatus and some of the fire and police personnel who were out front. None were struck, however.
After the shooting stopped, they forced entry and found Jessica Padilla, 22; her mother, Lori Padilla, 45; and father, Seaward Padilla, 43, all dead from gunshot wounds. Then they put the basement fire out successfully before it spread through the house. Police have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used for the crimes.
The family has a long history of police responses to their home dealing with domestic disturbances and a mental health problem of the father.
