The fire began when a stage act at the Dance King nightclub started shooting fireworks during the show.  One of them started a fire in the ceiling and the crowd of several hundred started to rush for the ONLY exit in the darkened building.

Shenzhen is in Guangdong Province and is located on the border with Hong Kong.  The Guangdong Governor seems the think the problem with the fire was a lack of ventilation.

“There was something wrong with the architectural design,“ he told the media after inspecting the nightclub.  “If there was a better ventilation system, there wouldn’t be so many deaths in the fire.”

The unlicensed club is on the third floor of a market building.  The venue has a capacity of about 350 patrons and is solely accessible by a single stairwell.  All of the windows in the building have been covered over.
