Morning Lineup – September 8

On our Morning Lineup on August 18 (HERE) we talked about HP’s new desktop/portable PC that has the entire computer built into the monitor and comes with wireless keyboard and mouse.  The machine has Wi-Fi built in so you can literally take the machine to anyplace in the house you want to use it.

I was wondering (hoping) if the concept will take off because I really like the idea of it and I believe that is the near future of the home computer market.

Well, it looks like it’s going to be an option for a while, anyway.  DELL has introduced a similar model, the Dell XPS One which is a very similar machine.

This new Dell is listed at the same price as the HP ($1,300) but it also comes with a TV tuner built in.  The Dell’s card reader handles 8 types of cards whereas the HP only takes 5.  But both of them read the SD card which seems to be sorting out to be the universal favorite.

Another nice thing about the Dell, in my opinion anyway, is the monitor is on a pedestal with a swivel allowing you to tilt it up or down.  The HP’s monitor sits on the desktop and is tilted by adjusting the fold-out picture frame style brace.  The Dell’s keyboard also has a touchpad built in for those of you who like to use those.

What brought the Dell to my attention was the Sunday paper sales flyer for the Staples office supply stores.  They are selling it this week for $900.  That’s a 30% discount just to get sales moving.  If you’re interested in trying one, I don’t expect them to have any left come Thursday, though.

PC Mag has a brief video review of it:

Check them both out online.  The HP machine is described HERE and Dell’s new XPS One has a full description HERE.

Okay, let’s get this equipment checked out.  I need to get some more coffee started.  See you in the day room.

You’ll see this more and more.

First, it’s easy to manufacture. If you’ve seen the predominance of laptops in the stores now…this is just a laptop with the parts rearranged a smidge.

Second, it helps them sell more $$$ — you have to buy the monitor with it. With LCDs far more reliable the CRTs, people otherwise could get away with just buying a new PC and reusing their existing LCD.
