THE TORONTO, ONTARIO, EMS UNION is going public again with another example of what they call inadequate resources and failure of management to respond to the citizens’ needs.
Sunday night every unit was already on a call when a dispatch came in for a person with no vital signs. When the dispatcher couldn’t find a free ambulance, he sent one that already had a patient onboard. They also sent a second one. While one medic remained in the back with their original patient, the other medic went inside to administer aid to the code blue patient who was never resuscitated and died.
The spokesman for the EMS Chief admitted that on occasion it does happen where they divert an ambulance that already has a patient to go and treat a 2nd patient.
Local 416 Chairman Glenn Fontaine sent a letter to Mayor David Miller earlier this week alerting him to the weekend incident.
“A potentially viable patient was not given the opportunity for resuscitation by the most advanced means, due to failure at Toronto EMS,” Fontaine wrote.
“Paramedics in Toronto are trying to make you, council and the public aware of the inadequate resources in Toronto. Toronto EMS management has not responded and keep playing Russian roulette with the residents of Toronto.”
