TWO WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, TEENAGERS are in critical condition following an accident in which they rode their bicycles into the path of an ambulance after dark on Monday night.

The Mount Airy News reports:

The (ambulance) was transporting a patient routine traffic, meaning no lights or sirens and no emergency, to Forsyth Medical Center.

“They had stopped at the light at Cherry Street at Target. Then they started up the hill, and were actually under the speed limit, and out of nowhere the driver saw a blur and then crash,” Shelton said, relaying Busick’s account of what occurred.

The ambulance stopped and Busick found two teens in the median. Shelton said he immediately started resuscitating measures on both boys until Winston-Salem Police Department and Winston-Salem Fire Department officials arrived on the scene…

The teens were wearing dark clothing, no reflective vests and no helmets.  Police say that there was no way that the ambulance driver could have avoided the impact.  In fact, he didn’t even know what he had struck until he got out of the ambulance and looked.

Both paramedics returned to their home station in Surry County around midnight and went through a critical incident debriefing. They have been told to take a shift off with pay to have time to deal with what happened, not for disciplinary reasons but to regroup emotionally.
