Early in the afternoon an elderly driver in a large sedan attempted to make a U-turn in the pathway of the ambulance that was responding with lights and siren, carrying a patient to the hospital. The ambulance driver had to swerve in order to prevent a head-on collision, yet he still clipped the car and spund it around. The ambulance traveled off the road and crashed into a vacant building resulting in the destruction of the ambulance.
Both medics along with the driver of the car were taken to the hospital, as well as the original patient. The medics were treated and released, while the auto driver was admitted to the intensive care unit in stable condition. The patient did not suffer any injuries as a result of the crash.
The Health Services Agency (HSA), which operates the ambulances, said that they believe this is the first time they have ever had a serious accident with one of their ambulances. In order to maintain their fleet at three units in service, they will take one of their non-emergency transport vehicles and outfit it with the necessary equipment to replace the wrecked ambulance.
