Crazed Gunman Kills Missouri FF At Fireground
THE ST. LOUIS SUBURB OF MAPLEWOOD, MISSOURI is the scene of a deadly confrontation between the fire and police departments and a gunman.
An alarm was sent to the fire department for a vehicle fire and when the engine arrived on the scene a man in a house across the street opened fire on the firefighters. First-year Firefighter Ryan Hummert, 22, was shot as he stepped out of the cab and was killed.

This image from KSDK shows the pickup truck fire
that was used to bait the FD into the ambush.
The shooter was in a house across the street just
off the upper right of the picture.
The house where the gunman was located then broke out on fire while the FF’s were pinned down behind their apparatus. As the police arrived, the crazed man continued shooting and has wounded two police officers. The entire area is surrounded and on shutdown as the house burns.
The FD set up an elevated master stream from a distance and has been lobbing water onto the house which has been burning for several hours now. The master stream has successfully kept the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, but the location of the gunman is unknown.
Police are keeping a controlled perimeter around the house and have not yet made any attempt to approach it. There has been no recent activity coming from the culprit.
