Another Big Ka-Boom

EVERYBODY LOVES TO WATCH THOSE BUILDING IMPLOSIONS that bring down unwanted high-rises to make room for new buildings that will be blown up 40 years from now.

On Saturday it was the folks in Louisville, Kentucky who got the chance watch the unique operation and to suck in a little concrete dust.

The nine-story office building at Second and Main streets was brought down at 7 am to make room for a multipurpose arena scheduled to open in 2010. The University of Louisville’s basketball teams will be the main tenants of the arena. 

Crews used about 500 pounds of nitroglycerine-based explosives. It took about 10 seconds for the building to come down once the explosions started.
