The medic crew had parked the ambulance at the entrance to the Spohn Memorial Hospital and left the engine running while they took their patient into the receiving area. While they were gone, a deranged woman who is being treated at a drug rehab center there climbed into the ambulance and drove away.
After driving a few blocks, she pulled over and got out and started walking away. The ambulance has a GPS tracking system installed, so the police found it quickly and also found the woman nearby. She has been taken to jail and charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Corpus Christi FD spokesmanCaptain Robert Ruiz said the ambulance was not damaged, and the fire department may have to review its policy about leaving emergency vehicles running when they are unattended.
