The classes, for this year anyways, are only in June and July. If you have someone put their application in on 1 August, and it's required they complete the pathogens class before going active, it's next June at the earliest they're cleared to ride. We, too, have it as a prerequisite for new members before they can respond to calls. We don't require FF-I (they can respond in a support role), and we try to get new members through the initial physicals, orientation, and very basic training to provide fireground support within three months.
