San Antonio University Landmark Burns
A SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, LANDMARK BUILDING SUFFERED HEAVY FIRE DAMAGE Tuesday night.
The oldest building on the campus of Our Lady of the Lake University caught fire shortly after 7:30 pm and caused significant damage. The Main Building, built in 1895, housed the university’s administrative offices and one section was used as dormitory space for 35 students.
Everybody was evacuated swiftly and safely as the building was burning. Subsequently one of the two spires collapsed in the fire. This raw video taken at the fire’s peak shows the steeple failing:
There have been a series of malicious false alarms pulled in the building recently and earlier yesterday a small trash fire was set in a nearby building but extinguished quickly.
The loss of the charming building is a blow to the Catholic school which has a small endowment and declining enrollment.
Fire Chief Charles Hood said that it was a difficult fire because of its location on the top floor and high winds were destroying the fire streams.
