WHEN A SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, FAMILY CALLED FOR an emergency ambulance Sunday, their patriarch was alive and needed medical treatment for his bone cancer.

When the AMR-operated ambulance arrived, they evaluated the man and then carried him from the 2nd-floor apartment out to the ambulance. Before they pulled away from the curb, though, the man died in the back of the ambulance. After conferring with the ER doctor and informing him of the patient’s “do not resuscitate” order, the ambulance crew carried him back upstairs to the apartment and left him with the family.
The family is upset and the AMR officials say that they were following the law. But the method of handling the situation is causing a PR problem for AMR.
