The ambulance was not on a call at the time when the 19-yr.-old driver sideswiped a work van that was parked on the side of Route 59. The impact ripped the right side of the ambulance off, leaving the passenger door imbedded in the rear of the van. Ames had her right arm torn off also and was flown to a trauma center where she underwent surgery. She is reported to be out of life-threatening danger.
The responding FD had to use multiple jaws-of-life tools to effect the extrication.
The police have not yet issued a statement or report on the accident.
