Golly, a new week already. I haven’t even finished last week yet and now I’ve got to start another one.
All those people who went to the FDIC are back home now and will be telling us all about it over the next few days. I’m always curious to see what the latest trends are. Lately, the FDIC has also been the chosen site for equipment manufacturers to make a big splash with their latest innovations and technological advances. That’s always fun, too. The innovation that has been opened up because of the development of the microchip is fascinating.
It’s safe to say that the microchip is the one thing that has propelled technology into the new century. Everything is done differently now. The most visible example is the common automobile. Compare today’s factory assembly line with those movies you see of the old auto plants. You have these robot thngs doing the mundane work and they are all controlled by programmed microchips.
And the same holds true for each step of the entire production process, starting with the computers that the engineers use to design the cars’ bodies, frames, engine specs., and so on. And the cars themselves are loaded with microchips now. They’ve developed to the point where you hardly have to do any maintenance to them, save a little routine preventive work.
No longer do you have to spend at least one Saturday afternoon each month cleaning and re-gapping the spark plugs or draining the water out of the fuel filter. And I never could get the hang of setting those carburetor jets just right.
And don’t forget what is probably the most outwardly visible reminder of auto electronics advancement……the clock. Yep, that simple basic accessory used to be the biggest joke on the auto industry. Those mechical dashboard clocks couldn’t take the constant road vibration. For a long time, new cars came with just a 90-day warranty. And the clock would invariably quit working on day 91. And I mean permanently quit working. Now when I turn the key, I get the right time every time. Ain’t that amazing?
Well, let’s go check out the equipment now (and dust off the microchip box). I need to start the coffee and get serious, I suppose.
