The Cessna 310 was apparently approaching the Compton (Los Angeles County) airport which is less than a mile away when it suddenly dropped onto the homes at 4 pm Pacific time. The fuselage crashed through one home’s roof and the left wing went into the neighboring house. The flight had originated in San Diego and was scheduled to land at the Hawthorne Municipal airport which is about 10 miles away. It had two passengers on board and both passengers and two people in the house were seriously injured while a fifth person in the house next door was slightly injured. Fortunately, even though there was a resulting fuel leak from the plane, there was no ignition and no fire when the Compton firefighters arrived on the scene. They quickly applied foam to the fuel spill and mitigated the hazard.

The regional urban search & rescue team from the Downey and Vernon fire departments was dispatched to stabilize the house before investigators could get inside. It is not yet known what caused the plane to crash. The Hawthorne airfield has a manned control tower, but it was not initially known if the plane had been in contact with it.
