Aussie FF's Snub Petty Politicians

Comments Off

FIREFIGHTERS IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, refused to get pulled into a petty “turf war” by two local politicians on Friday.

Recently the NSW State Government purchased a new $1.3 million ladder-platform truck for the fire brigade and they stationed it in the Wollongong fire station.  The local MP for Wollongong is Noreen Hay, who has been caught up in a bit of political scandal lately.

The MP for the neighboring electorate is David Campbell who is the minister in charge of public safety and is a bitter opponent of Mrs. Hay.  Campbell set up a big press conference to stage a publicity-rich “official handover” of the new truck to the fire brigade.

However, he scheduled it to take place at the Balgownie fire station which is in his district and asked the fire brigade to drive the truck cross-country to pose with him.  It just went downhill from there.

The Wollongong firefighters refused to take the truck over to Balgownie for the press conference.  “We think the Government is trying to hide Noreen Hay and use firies as patsies in doing this,” NSW Fire Brigade Employees Union state secretary Simon Flynn said.
