THE INIOS CHEMICAL REFINERY IN COLOGNE, GERMANY, SUFFERED A MAJOR FIRE that started Monday afternoon and burned throughout the night.

The fire started when an ethylene pipeline sprung a leak and ignited. The highly volatile ethylene burned fiercely and set fire to a nearby tank of acryl nitrile sending flames 50 feet into the air and generating a 1,500 ft. high cloud of smoke which began drifting toward the city.

The nearby Cologne-Neuss railway line – under which the ethylene pipe passes – as well as the A57 motorway, to and from Cologne, were closed due to poor visibility because of the smoke.
The fire department remained on the scene all day Tuesday while specialist equipment was brought in to cool the tank down and control the fire.
