One of the best ways to make your paycheck go farther is to buy the things that you need when they are on sale. With a little patience you can apply that principle to almost every consumer item that you buy, particularly clothing and food.
So you don’t need catsup yet. But if it’s on sale at 20% off, grab one and put it on the shelf. I’ve always said that practicing “strategic shopping” like that is just like getting a 10% pay raise. Then I have more money for computer programs and beer.
But lately the grocery stores haven’t been cooperating with my shopping habits. There’s not much on sale lately. Have you noticed that? The weekly sales flyers that they put out are about 80% items at regular price. They use phrases like “Everyday low price!!” and “Always lower prices!” It takes all the joy out of planning the tactical shopping route of travel in order to maximize my earnings.
Firegeezer readers learned back in October (HERE) about the world-wide hops shortage that led to the recent surge in beer prices. And the cost of gasoline to drive to the beer store for the weekly supply has risen markedly, too.
So, what to do, what to do?

They’ve gone and done it again, those silly Yuppies. For years now we’ve been watching in amusement as they enter Autumn with the annual ritual of dumping their fireplace ashes into the plastic trash can in the gararge and then retreating into the “family entertainment” room to watch a DVD while the fire gets a good hold in the attic.
Now it’s time for the Spring version of the Yuppie Fire Dance and a family in Overland Park, Kansas, was the first out of the gate yesterday afternoon when they fired up the barbecue grill and burnt the burgers with it parked against the side of the house. Loss is estimated at $100,000.
We’ll never be out of a job, don’t worry about that. So let’s get the equipment checked out. We might be next. I’ll go start the coffee.
