Downtown Fire in Baxter, Tennessee
THE TOWN OF BAXTER, TENNESSEE (pop. 1,300) suffered a major fire in the town center this morning that took out about 1/3 of the town’s business district.
A passerby reported seeing smoke in the area around 4 am. When the FD arrived on the scene a building containing a restaurant and a furniture store was fully involved. The Wagon Wheel Restaurant and Bar had been in business since 1936.
Fire Chief Chris Holmes said that an entire block was on fire and that they called for mutual aid from Cookeville, Livingston and Putnam County.
The Nashville Tennessean has an early REPORT.
The Upper Cumberland Daily News has a VIDEO.
Update: A good photo gallery taken by one of the locals and posted HERE on the Baxter Weather Station website.

My heart is broken…my parents grew up in Baxter and Cookville. My mother’s family was instramental in the development of Baxter. Thank goodness we visited two years ago for a family reunion, at an age that we can appreciate our parents lifestyle as children, and my anchestors hardwork.

Not mentioned in this story was the mutual aid response from volunteer firefighters from Jackson County as well.
I was looking to come that weekend for the karaoke contest.
