Fortunately, this woodpile had already been separated into separate mounds awaiting disposal, so the fire brigade didn’t have a miles-long fire on their hands. Using seven large-stream nozzles, 50 firefighters, along with some heavy equipment, contained the fire and had it put out by Sunday night.

They were initially worried that the fire would ignite the adjoining piles, but an off-shore breeze aided in containing it. The fire has been ruled to have been deliberately set.

On January 15, the Greek freighter Ice Prince sank in a storm in the English Channel just off the Sussex coast. Its primary cargo was a 6,000 ton load of lumber. The rough seas broke the bindings of much of the piles and approx. 3,000 tons of boards began washing up along a 10-mile stretch of shore.

This entire area is a popular seaside resort filled with hotels and amusement piers that are getting ready for the upcoming season. The hardest hit was Worthing where the fire was set. They had already begun clearing the beach and had separated the lumber into piles for safety’s sake.
