A malfunctioning furnace in a furniture store is the suspected point of origin.  When the FD arrived on the scene the store was fully involved and as they were fighting the fire while awaiting mutual aid companies, it spread to two other businesses and three apartment units.

The massive firefighting effort practically drained the town’s reservoir and the 11 fire departments had to lay LDH lines to the Hudson River and draft from it.

Fire crews are remaining on the scene all day today as heavy equipment removes the rubble of the three destroyed buildings.

The town has closed the schools because of the water emergency and mandatory water-use restrictions are in place.

In addition to the three families made homeless from the fire, as many as 50 more people have been forced from their homes due to the power outage caused by the fire.
