Update:  Fire point-of-origin identified.  Scroll down.

FOLLOWING LAST NIGHT’S DEVASTATING FIRE that swept through a portion of the famous Camden Market, firefighters are putting out the hot spots  and working their way toward the center of the fire-damaged area.

They are working slowly because of uncertainties over the structural stability of many of the buildings.  Many of the roads, subways and train stations in the area remain closed.  Sunday is traditionally the busiest day of the week for shoppers at Camden Town’s shops, cafes, pubs and markets.

Police kept the burned-out area closed off with a cordon this morning but allowed tourists and shoppers to use a large part of the unaffected Camden High Street commercial area.

Investigators have begun searching for the cause and location of the fire’s origin.  Police chief superintendent Dominic Clout said: “It is far too early at the moment to say whether the cause of the fire is suspicious or otherwise.  The fire brigade cannot confirm where the seat of the fire is.”

Update, 1:45 pm:  The fire investigators have identified the point-of-origin but are not yet ready to publicly release the information.  The BBC is reporting:

Nigel Hall, of the London Fire Brigade, said: “We do know exactly where the fire started. We’ve got some witness statements already… taken from people.

The cause of the incident we won’t know until our investigators have managed to get in there once the building has been made safe… Along with the police, we’ll investigate the seat of the fire.”
