Retirement Home Fire Kills 11

FIRE IN A RETIREMENT / NURSING HOME IN WESTERN AUSTRIA last night has claimed 11 lives and injured 6. The 4-story apartment building was the residence for 23 people and two staff workers were there when the fire started. (note: other reports say that 23 people escaped.)

It is believed to have started on the first floor and then spread quickly througout the 140-yr.-old building. The Austria Press Agency reports that 250 firefighters were called in and that the victims were believed to have died from smoke inhalation.
