The garage is owned by the Health and Hospital Corp. of Marion County and is the maintenance facility for Wishard Memorial Hospital’s ambulance service.

Workers in the building were able to remove three ambulances safely as the fire was getting underway.  An additional complication was at a neighboring school where a large amount of smoke got into the school’s ventilation system and sickened about 30 of the 350 students.

The outside temperature at the time of the fire was 14º F. and along with a stiff wind the efforts of 100 firefighters were required.  An eventual roof collapse trapped a lot of burning debris underneath and the FD was kept on the scene for several hours as heavy equipment was brought in to remove the roof sections to expose the fire remnants.
