The fast-moving fire began around 5 pm yesterday and totally destroyed the buildings.  It was early enough in the evening that everybody got out safely.

The Muskegan Chronicle has the early STORY.

Outside temp. at 7 pm Sunday night:  10º F.

Update, 1:40 pm:
Fire Department officials are saying that they believe the fire started in the Northeast corner of the building but the exact point-of-origin and the cause may never be known because of the extensive damage.

The fire rapidly got up into the common attic area which did not have firewalls separating the buildings.  As many as 100 dwelling units were destroyed.

The Grand Rapids Press has MORE.
