THE NICOL VFD, NEAR TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA, LOST THE ONLY FIRE CHIEF the department ever had Wednesday night when Allan Sullivan passed away at age 54.
He co-founded the Nicol Volunteer Fire Dept. in 1998 and became its first Chief, a position he held until he died. He was a popular, well-liked member of the community.
The Tuscaloosa News, in a story published today, recounts the tale Chief Sullivan’s close friend Gaston Wilson told about the “Dalmation Chicken”:
“In 2000, some firefighters from Chicago came down here to visit and one of the guys was bragging about what kind of tricks the Dalmatian dog they had could do,” Wilson said. “They wanted to know what kind of mascot we had.”
“Well, the fire station is a converted chicken house and there’s some spotted chickens out there, so I told him we had a Dalmatian chicken,” he said laughing.
“Allan and I showed him the Dalmatian chicken. One guy took a picture of it and turned it into the Chicago Tribune who got in touch with The Tuscaloosa News about it.”
“A reporter for The News called me and I told him the story,” he said. “He wrote the story up on it and it went nationwide. We just had all kinds of fun with it. I’m looking at a picture of Allan holding that chicken right now.”
