Ban On ‘Silly String’ During Fire Dept. Parades Being Proposed
THE LONG ISLAND TOWN OF HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK, will be hearing a proposal tonight to ban the use of Silly String “or similar gaseous, liquid or semi-liquid product or substance” during “parades, processions, fairs and expositions” within the town.
The local Fire Chief’s Council says that the substance damaged the finish and weather stripping on fire trucks during parades. The use of Silly String “has become common practice during holiday and commemorative parades” in town, according to the fire council, which has asked the board to ban it.
The Long Island Newsday has the STORY.

Pretty soon nobody will go to parades. They won’t let the spectators shoot silly string and they won’t let the participants throw candy. The next law may be worded “No person during any parade, procession, or event, may at any time appear to have fun, a good time, or anything resembling any of the above.”
OK, maybe that was an exaggeration, but our firetrucks have been hit with silly string and the paint didn’t fall off. If their trucks were damaged, I can see why they would like it banned. But I think a few Public Service Announcements could do the same thing without more government regulation. Nobody would shoot silly string at the trucks if they knew it damaged them.

My community banned the sale of Silly String in the mid 1980’s. During a particularly hot Labor Day parade, “silly String” that was sprayed onto fire apparatus, police cruisers and antique cars int he parade caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to the paint finishes.
