THE MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, FIRE BRIGADE RESPONDED to a house fire yesterday morning which had the tenant trapped in his house. Despite their efforts while breaking into the house, the occupant died in the fire.
The Age newspaper tells us:
The 53-year-old dialled the 000 emergency line at 3.56am saying that his weatherboard home near the old Pentridge prison was on fire and that he was trapped.
The operator told him to find a way out of the house. But Mr Nicholson calmly responded that he wanted to fight the blaze.
Firefighters arrived two minutes later, but it was too late. Mr Nicholson’s body was lying a metre from the front door alongside a metal bucket. Police believe he used the five-litre container to carry water between his bathroom sink and the flames before he was overcome by the fire.

While this was taking place shortly before 5 am, a motorist nearby phoned the police emergency line and reported that the driver of another car was deliberately ramming him several times in what appeared to be a “road rage” incident.
The police dispatcher advised him to head for the nearby fire scene where the police had already set up a road block. The Herald Sun reports:
(The) raging driver turned his car around before doubling back and tearing through the blockade as emergency workers jumped out of his path.
Police gave chase, reaching 140km/h as the driver raced up the Hume Highway, blowing a tyre in Campbellfield and continuing for 70km until he ran into trees at Broadford.
With guns drawn, police smashed a passenger-side window and arrested the man shortly after 5am.
It’s not just on the freeways, you have to watch out for them everywhere.
