The retailer had recently fully stocked with his merchandise for the Christmas shopping season and all was lost, including the buildings. He estimated the buildings worth at $17 million and the stock another $40 million.
The fire began around 2:30 pm under some interior stairs while the multi-building store was open. There were 64 employees and about 100 customers on the property at the time. When the fire was discovered several employees attacked it with portable extinguishers. However, the fire brigade was not immediately notified. After exhausting 12 extinguishers and seeing the fire continue to grow, the call went out to the fire dispatch.
The Tunapuna fire station was on the scene promptly and called for assistance, but by then the fire was too advanced to save the business.
