Zoo Fire In Indianapolis Kills “Program” Animals

A FIRE AT THE INDIANAPOLIS ZOO SATURDAY morning killed and injured several animals in the educational building known as Critter Corner.

The animals in that collection were used for special programs such as public events and television appearances, as well as their popular “Zoomobile” that traveled around the state.

The building was sprinklered with a monitored alarm, so the first-alarm response of the FD was able to handle the 4:30 am fire easily.

Channel 15 reports:

“These animals in our care are really important to us and to the folks that care for them and our planet,” Indianapolis Zoo President and CEO Mike Crowther said. “We’re learning more and more all the time about how the interconnectedness that makes this world work.

Saturday workers spent several hours washing the animal cages that were inside the Critter Corner. The animals in that exhibit are often used in public education programs and taken out in the zoo-mobile.

“When we take animals to visit schools and hospitals, the kids suddenly start building bonds that they didn’t have before,” Crowther said.

The building will be closed for a while, but the rest of the zoo remains open for visitors.
