INMATES OF A MEN’S PRISON IN ARGENTINA started a fire in their cell block late Sunday night that killed at least 29 prisoners.  There are some accounts that say the toll has risen to 31.  Most of the deaths are attributed to asphyxiation from the thick smoke of the burning mattresses that were used to fuel the fire.

Prison authorities believe it was started as a diversion to trigger an escape attempt that failed.  None of the prisoners managed to get out of the compound located about 700 miles north of Buenos Aires.  The prison houses about 450 inmates and was immediately sealed off by police who also restrained a mob of civilians outside who tried to storm the prison entrance.
