I attended the citizens academy. I "played fireman" for the weekend and it was great. It was a lot more intense than I had expected. I am older than the other applicants (37), and it took me a few days to fully recover. But I got a taste and want more - I Loved it. I can answer any questions from the perspective of an applicant.

Dear Firegeezer,
Thanks a lot for running the story here! Thanks also for the congratulations for a successful program. I would like to make a correction, if I may. The sponsoring agency was the La Vista Fire Department of which I am Chief. We conducted the training at our neighboring community's (Bellevue) training facility. In answer to your question regarding how we connected with these people; we have an established rapport with the local media. They ran stories about the proposed event weeks prior and generated interest. We published the event on our website and also posted flyers and brochures at local businesses.
We have no illusion that this event will be a cure-all for recruitment issues, but we hope that it will generate interest in citizens to take that important "first step" toward volunteerism. Again, thanks a lot for your positive and encouraging comments. Rich Uhl, La Vista Fire Chief
