Fire Chief Induces Gasoline Explosion, Suffers

Comments Off

THE CLINTON, CONNECTICUT, VOLUNTEER FIRE CHIEF was at his day job Tuesday as crew chief of the town Dept. of Public Works.  While trying to start a leaf blower in garage, he poured a small amount of gasoline into the carburetor to “prime” it, then left the gas can uncapped when he tried to start the blower.

It backfired, ignited the gasoline vapors which exploded and set his clothing on fire.  Fortunately there were other PW employees in the garage at the time, some of them volunteer FF’s also, and they immediately smothered the flames and cut his shirt off.  They were able to begin first aid while awaiting the medics.

The Chief, Jeff Heser, was airlifted to a burn unit where he is listed in “guarded” condition.
