We have a lot of chores and scheduled activities today, so we’ll keep Lineup brief so you can get right to the equipment check.
The out-of-control fires in southern Calif. are holding everybody’s attention right now, and for good reason. Fast-moving fires in California are nothing new, but when they come into the inhabited areas it is heart-rending to see all those people torn away from their homes suddenly. In many cases they never get to come back.

This happened just four years ago, too. In 2003 the fires down there destroyed over 2,000 homes and left 22 people dead. But we don’t seem to remember that too well. Why not? Well, to answer that, it’s partly because of the seismic shift of news dissemination since then. Just look at what’s been added to the information-gathering world in the past couple of years.
Right here, for example, you have the dynamic websites called “blogs” that are posting articles, photos and videos online as they come available. Television news services have added scores of helicopters to their news gathering/reporting arsenals. And now for the first time ever, you can sit down at home at whatever time is convenient for you, log on and choose from a list of websites that offer expert commentary, reports from insiders that are involved in the event itself, views of thousands of photographs taken just moments before, video reports of the story, and now we even have live video streaming allowing us to actually watch the event as it is happening.
A freely- and fully-informed people are the basis for preserving our freedoms. Take advantage of it.
OK, let’s get that equipment checked. We’ve got a lot to do today. I’ll get the coffee going.
