It’s Knot What You Think
SATURDAY MORNING A LITTLE MORE THAN 800 BOY SCOUTS gathered on a field near Haymarket, Virginia, to make an attempt at breaking the World’s Record for tying the “Longest Knotted Rope Chain Made in Five Minutes.”

The official record, which is maintained by the famed Guinness Book of World Records, is one that is usually challenged by Boy Scout troops.
The record they were trying to break was one the troop itself had achieved five years ago. That effort resulted in a knotted rope 5,278.9 feet long. And that had broken the initial record, set by a Sea Cadet troop in London, England, of 4,509.5 feet.
They lined up alongside more than 8,000 pieces of untied cord that snaked back and forth over ground the size of two side-by-side football fields. At an air-horn signal, they began to tie the pieces together, following the competition rules.
