2 Irish FF’s Perish In Factory Fire
IN YET ANOTHER INSTANCE OF A COLLAPSING ROOF, two firefighters in County Wicklow, Ireland, died yesterday while fighting a fire inside a vacant factory building.
The two men, named as 45-year-old Brian Murray and 25-year-old Mark O’Shaughnessy, both from Bray, died while attempting to extinguish the fire which broke out at the vacant building on the Lower Dargle Road.
The first man was a father of thirteen children, who was a sub-officer and second-in-command at Bray Fire Station. He was an experienced and long-serving firefighter, who joined the service almost 15 years ago. The second man is believed to have only recently joined the Fire Service.
They are the first LODD’s from a fire in the Irish Republic since 1936.
Both of them were “retained” firemen, part-time FF’s, which is fairly common in that area. The elder FF, Brian Murray, has been a long and vocal proponent of upgrading the town’s fire brigade to a full-time professional service.
The County has initiated three separate investigations into the tragedy.
