The fire began while the department store was open and occupied. It is believed to have started underneath a counter in the cosmetics department on the ground floor around 3:15 local time. It apparently spread rapidly through the building, but everybody was evacuated safely.
The fire department was faced with a challenging fire, yet managed to contain it within the building and prevented spread to the adjoining stores. The value of the building was AUS$40 million, plus store stock.
The Herald Sun has the STORY.
