2 Batt. Chiefs Suspended In Indianapolis

Comments Off

AFTER SETTLING  A SEXUAL-DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE Fire Department, the Chief handed down suspensions on two battalion chiefs that are catching the heat for it.  Fire Department Chief James Greeson suspended Battalion Chief Richard Longerich for 80 work hours and Battalion Chief John Walker for 32 work hours in connection with their failure to obey direct orders and department rules.

Longerich was punished because he didn’t attend a gender-sensitivity training course after Greeson ordered him to go.  Walker was punished because he attended a party at the firefighters’ union hall in July 2005. At the event, about 200 firefighters raised funds to offset money Walker and Battalion Chief Richard Van Sant lost when Greeson punished them for the original harrassment complaint.

The City’s top attorney said:   “The chief has made it very clear to the brass of the fire service that he’s going to hold people accountable for any kind of retaliation, discrimination or other conduct that is unbecoming of the fire service.”

But Firegeezer notes that this punishment appears to be a form of retaliation in itself.
