WHAT WAS ONCE THE MIGHTY BRITISH EMPIRE has devolved into childish nanny-state with simple bureaucrats seizing the moral authority to tell others how to live.

Here is just another example of how this once-great nation has lost its bearings.  Three firefighters in Manchester are being disciplined because they laid down on the floor to nap during the night instead of using the official reclining chairs.  It seems that the pencil-pushers who go home every night took the beds out of the fire stations and stocked them with $800 recliners.  But, now get this, they couldn’t use the recliners until they had been properly trained on how to sit in a chair.  These men who make snap decisions on how to save a life need to be taught how to sit in a chair.

The disciplinary action arises because the FF’s found that laying on the floor was actually more comfortable than the overpriced chairs.  Can’t have that, now.  And these poor, simple firefighters got caught because some officer sneaked in early one morning and rummaged through their lockers.  Gawd, where has common sense gone?

Calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone adds to response times

Comments Off

THE PROBLEMS CREATED BY CELL PHONES FOR emergency calls are pretty well known.  The biggest drawback is that the routing of the call can put the caller in touch with a dispatch center that is nowhere near the locality he’s calling from. [photopress:call_9_1_1.jpg,full,pp_image] This leads to delays in dispatch because the call-taker needs to ask more questions before the call can be re-routed to the correct area.

In an attempt to cut down on response times, the City of Ventura, California is proposing placing a “roving” fire engine on the streets that will cruise to peak areas during times of high activity.

New Missouri state law throws fire and police overtime rules into turmoil

Comments Off

FIRE & RESCUE DEPARTMENTS THAT DON’T HAVE formal labor contracts with their employees are in a quandry.  A new law passed by the state legislature concerning minimum wage requirements failed to include the exemptions that are usually provided for the unusual shift-work requirements of public safety workers.  There is currently a joint lawsuit filed on behalf of several smaller jurisdictions to stay the new law as it affects fire and police.  If the lawsuit fails, dozens of small towns will be in a financially untenable situation.

Firegeezer says:  Once again we have a situation where a bunch of grandstanding politicians went headline-hunting without first learning what the consequences of their action would be.

Once in a blue moon

Comments Off

TONIGHT’S FULL MOON WILL BE THE 2nd full moon during this calendar month, the first was on May 2.  Whenever this happens, the second full moon is called the “blue moon.”

How did this name come about?  The phrase “blue moon” dates back to a 16th century proverb:

If they say the moon is blue,
We must believe that it is true.

In other words, it indicated an obvious absurdity.  For a long time the term “until a blue moon comes” meant “never.”  But in more modern times it evolved into “once in a blue moon” meaning “rarely.”

And rarely does the two-full-moon phenomena occur.  The last one occurred on July 31, 2004.  Even more rare, two blue moons occurring in the same year happens once every 19 years or so.  The last time that happened was 1999 in January and March.

Note that these dates are for the Western Hemishere.  In the Eastern Hemisphere (which includes most of Europe) the full moons are a day later…..this year occurring on June 1 and June 30.

Dramatic video of new type of firefighter rescue technique

Comments Off

TV VIDEO CREW CAUGHT A FIREFIGHTER RESCUE technique in use yesterday.  It is initiated by placing a ground ladder against the opposite side of the fire building as a matter of routine on all calls.  It is the firefighter’s pre-arranged escape route and if it’s needed they slide head-first down the ladder.  This evolution needs to be taught and trained regularly.  Does your department do this?  You can bet that these two FF’s in Minneapolis are glad that they did.  Channel 11 has excellent video here.

University studies firefighter fatigue

Comments Off

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS TEAMED up with the Mesa Fire Dept. to do an in-depth look at firefighter fatigue and how it affects perfomance.

Firegeezer says:  This is an interesting article and it looks like they are exploring the right areas.  But what concerns me is the statement that Mesa needs four more stations and is refusing to build them.  Also, they have 5 trucks that are overdue for replacement.  FF fatigue will always be increased by overworking the troops from not keeping up with the growth of the community.  Once again, as Firegeezer repeatedly points out, this is a case of the local government spending its money on other things.  It’s not a shortage of money, but a shortage of concern for public safety and the firefighters’ health.

Sheboygan FD to take over ambulance service

Comments Off

THE SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN CITY COUNCIL has decided to move the responsibility of providing ambulance service to the fire department.  They have been contracting out the service for the past 30 years, but after a contentious period of debate within the town they voted 11-5 to make the change.  They were primarily motivated by the idea that they would save money by doing this.

The Sheboygan Fire Dept. already provides first-responder coverage from its 5 fire stations with all members certified as first responder, EMT or paramedic with an average 3-minute response time for the engine cos.

THE MAYOR OF A SMALL TOWN IN NEWFOUNDLAND caused an uproar recently when he confiscated all the booze from the local fire hall.  16 of the town’s 18 volunteer firefighters immediately quit and most of the town’s 600 residents demanded the city council resign.  Last week the [photopress:mayor_elliott.jpg,thumb,alignleft]

Wash., D.C. chief claims that 25% of the city’s hydrants are in need of repair

Comments Off

FOLLOWING THE FIRE AT THE Georgetown Public Library last month, it was disclosed that the two hydrants closest to the building were out of order.  [photopress:0743013945_gtown.jpg,thumb,alignleft]The FD then reported that they have been spot-checking the hydrants around the city for two years and found that 10% of them are out of service.

The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority disputed the claim, but said that they would speed up repairs.  Now the Chief says that the 10% represents the number that are completely 10/7 and another 15% are in urgent need of repair.

Firegeezer says:  This is so typical of what is going on in the large cities these days.  The politicians use the city agencies as patronage dumping grounds and hold nobody accountable for their failures.  The only things that ever get fixed are the things that are clearly visible to the voters.  Once again, it’s a case of putting their political careers ahead of what is good for the citizens.

Promotional opportunities

Comments Off

WITHIN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY of western Oregon, there are at least 8 fire chief vacancies.  And announced retirements will add another half-dozen in the next month.

This sudden plethora of job openings is partly the result of the rapid expansion of FD’s in the 1970’s.  All the people who came to work during that period are now retiring and there is concern about maintaining the leadership at the chief officer level.

This is a nation-wide situation caused by the earlier influx of the “Baby Boomer” generation when they came of age and moved into formerly rural areas bringing demands for more public services.  Now, as they are retiring, Fire & Rescue departments everywhere are scrambling to recruit replacements.  Fairfax County, Virginia is preparing to hire 100 firefighter/paramedics every year for the foreseeable future.

All of this competition to fill vacancies, coupled with ever-increasing standards for employment, will cause two things to happen.  First, entry-level pay scales (more…)
